Babirye Halima is an 8-year-old girl and a twin to Nakato Luuba. The two sisters live with their grandmother, elder sister, and aunt Bushira in Panda Village, Mayuge District, Uganda.
Their mother gave birth to 10 children, including two sets of twins. Sadly, after Halima and Nakato were born, their father rejected them and told their grandmother that he would only accept them when they were grown. Left with no support and no job, their mother entrusted the twins to their grandmother’s care and later remarried—unfortunately, to a man who showed little concern for her children.
Life at their grandmother’s home is extremely challenging. Food is often scarce, and the family sometimes goes to bed hungry. Halima and Nakato are not attending school because their grandmother, who is elderly and sickly, cannot afford the school fees. She is also currently caring for another family member in critical condition, which has made their situation even more difficult.
Despite all the hardships, Halima and Nakato remain hopeful. With a little support, they can have access to education, proper meals, and a brighter future.
