Nakato Luuba is an 8-year-old girl, a twin to Babirye Halima. The sisters live with their grandmother, elder sister, and Aunt Bushira in Panda village, Mayuge District, Uganda.
Their mother gave birth to 10 children, including two sets of twins. Sadly, after Nakato and Halima were born, their father rejected them, telling the grandmother he would only accept them once they are grown. Overwhelmed and without a job, their mother pleaded with her own mother—their grandmother—to take care of the twins. She later remarried, but the man she married does not care for her children.
At their grandmother’s home, life is extremely difficult. The family often goes to bed hungry due to lack of food, and Nakato and Halima are currently not attending school because their grandmother cannot afford the school fees. She is elderly, sickly, and burdened with the responsibility of caring for another family member who is critically ill.
Despite the hardship, Nakato and Halima remain bright, hopeful girls. With support, they can access the education, healthcare, and nutrition they urgently need to grow and thrive.
